What if School were Different?

This “digital story” is designed to tell the story of Parent Partnership Programs as they currently exist in Washington State. These programs are specifically designed for parents who want to take a leadership role in the education of their children and believe in the alternative and flexible model of learning supported by these programs. Because many parents in these programs believe that standardized testing is antithetical to the idea of individualized learning, they often refuse to take state testing. This leaves legislators with little or inaccurate information on which to evaluate the effectiveness of these programs, and thereby determine whether to continue funding them. The digital story that is posted here attempts to reflect the beauty of the philosophy behind these programs and point out the success that schools with reliable data, who follow this model, can demonstrate.

This digital story is my first attempt at a digital story and was created using PowerPoint, copyright free images, Camtasia and YouTube. It brings together the multimedia principles we have been studying recently, especially the “Personalization Principle”. I focused on my audience, which is disparate. I hope to communicate to legislators, who may have no opportunity to visit one of these programs, and to parents who are in these programs or are considering one of these programs. My word choices attempts to reach both of these populations.

I learned a great deal about how to simplify the task when using two different programs to create this project, ans well as the strengths and weaknesses of both PowerPoint and Camtasia. I look forward to the creation of other digital stories.
